Artist's Statement

Ruth studied art at the National Art School and later completed postgraduate study at the University of New South Wales. She has persisted in painting throughout her life and has, since 1998, organising her work so painting and her artwork is her focus.

Ruth has had a number of solo exhibitions: highlights to date have been solo exhibitions at Orange Regional Gallery in September and at Gallery Lane in 2000, ‘Burnt and Beyond’ exhibition at Hunter Street Gallery 2003,’A Sense of Self, A Sense of Place’ in 2005 and ‘Taking the Long Way’ Gallery HM Sydney 2007 to name a few. Ruth was also a selected member of the well received group exhibition ‘Land Out of Time’ at Penrith Regional Gallery that travelled to other regional galleries. All have been well received with resulting financial rewards.

The majority of Ruth’s work is on canvas using polymer paints with mediums, often combined with collage and mixed media. She also undertakes work on paper in a variety of processes and media; often combining different processes eg drawing, paint (sometimes with mixed media), collage, found objects and printmaking.

The main delight for the viewer in Ruth’s work is the use of colour combined with gesture and brushwork and the delight she takes in the surface quality. This, combined with the careful placement of shapes and colour, gives wonderful compositional tension within the work.
