ARTIST'S STATEMENT
|
Ulla began painting in New York City after moving there from Germany 30 odd years ago. In the 1980s she studied at the New York Art Students’ League, where her teacher, William Scharf, a former studio assistant and friend of Mark Rothko, guided her from plastic paints to oil abstractions and collage/assemblages. In 1992 she was part of a group show with the theme "New York" at Cornell Medical Center Library in NYC where her painting ‘Manhattan Tableau’ was acquired. Upon settling in Australia in 2002 she joined the Blackheath Art Society and works there often, predominantly with the Fauvian Group. In order to find new forms and textures and an emotive measure for her palette, she thoroughly acquainted herself with the modern indigenous painting culture as a guiding light and colour barometer. Oils are her preferred painting medium. Recently, she completed a harlequinade series based on 18th century playing cards as a form of modern portraiture. Ulla is represented by Event Horizon Gallery and more works can be viewed on their website. |
