Rowen Matthews

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

In the drawn figure studies, I concentrate on placing a controlled form (the human figure) in an abstract field of energetic gestural marks and intense colour.

Similarly, my larger paintings contain a combination of the wild energy, denseness and scale of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Park with intrusions of the intense colours provided by exotic introduced domestic gardens. The resultant images are crowded scapes with a small glimpse of sky and space. In an apparent contradiction (and I am engaged by apparent contradictions) the Mountains have developed a compatible reputation for both the wild and the tamed.
