SCARY FACE OF WATERCOLOUR Don't let cauliflower get in the way of you painting ! Understand the basic fundamentals of watercolour and why our brains process a passage of shape or tone or an image in a particular manner. Designed as an introduction to watercolour, learn how to do flat and graded washes and understand the importance of negative space in watercolour painting. Learn how to transform even somewhat primitive looking work into something special. A fun workshop for those who have been putting off watercolour or those who have dabbled.
PAUL McCARTHY
30 JANUARY 2010 (10 am - 4 pm)

SOLAR PLATE ETCHING

SOLAR PLATE DEMONSTRATION: Introductory lecture on solar plate etching. Understanding how images are created onto film and acetate. Demonstration of exposure and wash out. Develop ideas for solar plate by producing your drawings onto a drafting film with pencil and ink. Collage can also be used as a means to create your image which will need to be photocopied onto clear acetate film beforehand.
SOLAR PLATE ETCHING: Expose plate to the sun, followed by washing it in water to reveal your image. The plate will then need to be post exposed by baking it in the sun to seal the surface ready to print.
PRINT SOLAR PLATES: Further images may be developed and plates may be exposed in the sun. This day will be devoted to printing your solar plate.

ADVANCED WATERCOLOUR

The workshop will explore aspects of colour related to the colour wheel. This will include understanding colour temperature and its application in atmospheric perspective, colour vs tonal contrast and the secret to mixing convincing shadows.
Owen will discuss some accepted ‘rules of thumb’ for good composition; look at some historical examples, intuition vs logical structures; the use of compositional systems like the golden mean and demonstrate the process of developing a composition from thumbnail sketch to preliminary studies to finished work, including drafting, scaling and transferring images.

OWEN THOMPSON
25-26 APRIL 2010 10am - 4pm
Members $90 Non-Members $140
PORTRAITURE

Over 4 separate 3-hour classes, you will explore portraiture with a live sitter, starting with drawing followed by painting using your preferred media. The difference between drawing with "line" and "shape" will be demonstrated and this will flow into ways of using paint to achieve a likeness. Once the likeness is achieved, you will be free to be more expressive. The first class will start with drawing with the other classes being flexible. The group will be sharing one sitter which will mean changing positions around the studio, starting a new portrait each week.
